Ontario Begins to Sell Beer in Supermarkets

BREAKING NEWS (sort of): As of yesterday, Dec. 15, 2015 Ontario supermarkets began selling six-packs of beer. We can certainly cheers to that.

Wine sales are still being figured out, but when Premier Kathleen Wynne bought a six-pack of brews at the Loblaws on Leslie Street near Eastern Avenue in Ontario yesterday, the purchase symbolised the dream of former premier David Peterson in 1985.

Peterson had promised that beer and wine would be sold in corner stores but was unable to get the measure passed in the legislature, The Star reported. Thirty years later, his dream became reality (mostly).

Wynne's team had figured out the process for selling libations in grocery stores but is still working on navigating the sale of wine and the plan won't be complete until early next year.

"[Wine] is a lot more complicated than beer," an insider suggested and explained that negotiating beer sales is more straightforward than wine.

The announcement has been a significant change in alcohol retail in decades and up to 60 locations will be authorized to sell six-packs within the next two weeks.

The first 60 licenses were sold at auction with 48 sold to large grocery chains and 12 reserved for independently-owned retailers.

The Star reported that by May 2017 there will be 150 Ontario supermarkets selling beer and the number will only increase to a maximum of 450 which is about one-third of the province's 1,500 supermarkets.
