Celebrating Canada Day 2015

via PixabayThis year, Canada Day falls in the middle of the week--on a Wednesday. So, if you want to enjoy a long weekend and make a mini-vacation out of the holiday, you'll have to take two days off from work (not a bad idea, huh?).

Canada Day 2015 is the celebration of our nation's 148th birthday, recognizing when the country became a new federation by signing the Constitution Act on July 1, 1867. This holiday is a national statutory holiday, celebrated across all provinces and territories. Sure, most businesses will be closed--but Canada Day is so much more than just a day off! Here are some fun activities and events to attend on our great nation's birthday:

Ottawa
  • Support the Ottawa Food Bank by grabbing some food at the 23rd Annual Great Canadian Chicken BBQ.
  • Volunteer at the nation's capital and help make the holiday a memorable occasion for all.
  • Enjoy activities for kids and adults at Parliament Hill, Major's Hill Park and Jacques-Cartier Park, including cultural performances, art exhibits and fireworks displays.

Toronto

  • Sit at the beach during the day and stay for the amazing fireworks display at Ashbridges Bay.
  • Get some eats and enjoy some live music at Toronto Ribfest.
  • Kick off the Toronto Fringe Festival with some sketch comedy and live musicals. The festival runs through July 12th!

Montreal

  • Enjoy some family activities in Old Port, featuring hockey games, inflatable obstacles and face painting.
  • Check out some free live music at the Montreal Jazz Fest.
Winnipeg
