DIY Projects You Need A Permit For

Home improvements can be costly, time consuming, and an over all pain in the you know what between getting permits, dealing with the bills, and handling the builders.

Before you start the project, you may look at everything that needs to be done and say to yourself, "I think I'll just do this myself." Well, before you do, you may want to know that some home improvements do still need permits in order to be complete.

  1. Depending on your state and city, switching from an electric stove to a gas one may in fact require a permit. Personally, I don't recommend installing gas appliances yourself for the simple fact that you may do more harm than good. Gas leaks are very likely if any gas appliance is improperly installed and can be very harmful to your health, your family's health, and your home. This is one thing you should never skimp on. To be safe, never install any gas appliance by yourself. Get a permit, and hire a professional!

  2. Anything electric, especially wiring, should be installed by electricians. DIY wiring is prone to catching fire. Never install anything electric without a professional.

  3. Gas is another thing that should remain in the hands of a professional. Gas water heaters can not only cause serious injury, but you also risk a gas leak, fire, or flood. None of those sound fun, so we suggest you save this job for an expert. If you have a permit, an inspector looks over your job and verifies whether it was done properly or not.

  4. Doors and windows seem easy enough to replace on your own -- after all, how hard can it be to attach something to two hinges? Again, this is another DIY project you need a permit for. Entrances require permits. In the off chance first responders need to get into your home, they need to do so with ease; not meeting emergency egress requirements can keep them from entering the home to take care of the issue. Besides being a safety issue, windows and doors must be properly installed, so water does not get into your home and damage all of your belongings.

When doing outside work on your house or property, it can affect those living around you. If you are looking to do outside renovations, here's what you need permits for.

  1. Decks and porches can add a sense of comfort to your home. Your family is going to be spending a lot of time on this new structure... If it is not sound, someone could potentially get seriously hurt; and if you have anyone over, you risk the chance of getting sued as well. To avoid this, (you guessed it) get a permit!

  2. Fences add a great deal of privacy to your yard. However, some townships require you to have a certain height or even material for your fence. In this case, you must receive a permit and get a survey done in order to put up a fence.

  3. If you live in a state where severe storms frequently occur and are looking to install a shelter or safe room for your family, you must conform to FEMA specs. Otherwise, your shelter won't be doing much protecting. According to Blake Lee of F5 Storm Shelters, a pre-building permit is what you are looking to obtain. If registered, this permit allows "first responders [to know] who has storm shelters and where they need to look for you in case you get trapped inside."
If the reason you are doing all of these upgrades is to sell your home, you are going to want to make sure you have a permit. Not having one for any of the projects including remodeling a kitchen or bathroom could cost you the sale of your home in the future.
