Healthy Eating Tips for Your Move

Moving is stressful--you have so much to do, so sticking to a healthy diet may seem impossible. However, you don't have to let the chaos of your approaching relocation let you fall off track--preparing healthy meals during your move is simple with our help!

Before your move

In the last few weeks before moving day, your schedule will be jam-packed with packing your possessions and completing last-minute moving tasks. You won't have time to prepare elaborate meals, but it's a good idea to finish off the perishable food in your home before you move.
  •     Several weeks before moving day, take inventory of your freezer, fridge and pantry.
  •     Give priority to perishable food items and plan your menu for the next several weeks, creating recipes to use up fresh produce, meats, and frozen food
  •     Avoid trips to the grocery store and focus on recipes that use what you already have
  •     Make meals in bulk--crock pot dishes like soup, stew and turkey chili work great for your busy schedule--and divide meals into portioned containers and freeze to provide multiple easy meals during your hectic move-planning period
On the road
Is it a long trip to your new home? Avoid greasy diner food or drive-thru fare and pack nutritious meals that are easy to eat in the car.
  •     The day before your move, your refrigerator must be empty and defrosted, so take a quick trip to the store to pick up a few items for your travel meals
  •     Whole wheat wraps and cold cuts, hummus and veggies, granola or nut bars, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, and bottled water are all healthy finger-food options that travel well
  •     Prepare a cooler with ice packs the morning of your move so your food stays fresh and cold on your trip
The first night
When you arrive after a long hard day of moving, the last thing you want to do is unpack your cookware and slave away over the stove. However, resist the urge to order pizza and heat up one of these easy options!
  •     Pack a first-night meal in your cooler along with your food for the road, such as leftover chili or stew--if you made enough before your move, these meals could feed you for several days until you get settled in
  •     Make a quick trip to the grocery store--if you pick up a few staple ingredients, like a protein and produce, throwing together an easy meal won’t take too much effort
  •     Don’t forget your first breakfast--pack oatmeal, granola bars, whole grain toast, yogurt or hard-boiled eggs for an easy and nutritious breakfast option
