Helpful Space-Saving Packing Hacks for Your Move

Whether you're packing your compact car for a move or just trying to save some money on movers, taking up as little space as possible makes your move easier and more affordable. The following tips will help you pack tightly and make the most of your minimal space for your upcoming relocation!

Use your clothes as cushioning

Rather than using packing peanuts or newspaper to protect your items, use your wardrobe! While you should avoid using your expensive or fine garments, pajamas, workout clothes, socks, sweatshirts, or older attire can be used as filler in your moving boxes to prevent packed items from shifting during the move. It will also save you some cash on costly packing materials!

Wrap fragile items in towels or linens
Instead of using bubble wrap or packing paper, use your towels and linens to wrap your breakables. Dinner plates can be wrapped with dish towels before being stacked inside boxes. Use smaller wash cloths for glasses, and larger linens to cover your wood furniture and other items with delicate finishes susceptible to scratches. However, for your most valuable and fragile possessions, such as fine china or crystal, you may want to invest in professional packing materials for protection.

Pack items in your existing containers
Many of your possessions could probably double as storage containers to transport other belongings! Suitcases, Tupperware, plastic storage bins, hollow ottomans, decorative baskets, and even trash cans can safely hold your items during a move. Keep clothing and lightweight, non-breakable items inside your dresser when you move it--just be sure the drawers are secured to prevent them from sliding out in transit.

Stuff non-breakables in bags
While some fragile belongings should be carefully wrapped and packed in boxes for your move, others can be thrown into huge plastic bags for transport. Clothing, pillows, stuffed animals, and any soft objects can easily be stuffed into giant garbage bags, which are much easier to cram into small spaces than cardboard boxes. Space saver bags that become flat when you vacuum the air out are also useful for a move where space is tight.

Downsize your belongings!
The best way to save space is purging your unnecessary junk. Sort through your belongings and decide what you no longer use. Separate excess items into piles to sell, donate, give away, or throw out.
