How to Bear-Proof Your Home

how to bear proof your homeWhat do you call a wet bear? A drizzly bear! Now that that bad joke is out of the way, bears are fairly common in Canada. Canada also has a variety of bears. This includes black bears (the most common), grizzly bears, polar bears, and brown bears (the least common). You can actually go on tours that allow take you to common bear locations. But sometimes, bears can come to your home uninvited. This is a problem because they can cause damage or be a risk to your pets and children. So, it’s a good idea to set up your home in a way that will deter bears. Here at TopMoving.ca, we have some tips on how to bear-proof your home

Bird feeders

You should store your bird feeders by April 1 until early winter, which is the time that bears will be hibernating. This is pretty much free food to a bear and he will attempt to eat it. When you do have your bird feeder out, make sure to regularly clean up beneath them.

Garbage cans
Much like the bird feeders, your garbage cans look like easy meals to a bear. You should store your garbage in bear-resistant trash cans or inside a storage area. Also, put your garbage out right before pick-up time. Make sure to regularly clean and deodorize cans with bleach. Bears have an excellent sense of smell.

Grills
Never leave food on the grill unattended. After you use your grill, make sure to clean it thoroughly. This means also cleaning the grease can and drip tray. When you’re finished with the grill, make sure to store it in the garage or shed when not in use.

Compost
Creating compost is great for your garden but not great when you’re trying to deter bears. If you have issues with bears, don’t add anything with a strong smell, such as meats, melon rinds, or sweet-smelling foods. Make sure to regularly turn the pile and add lime to help reduce odors. You can add extra protection by enclosing it with electric fencing.

Install deterrents
There are also deterrents you can install to help scare away bears without any injuries to them. There are three types of deterrents you can install
  • Infrared motion detector. This deterrent sprays water to scare off animals
  • Motion-activated sound systems. These deterrents sound like a barking dog and some are radar-activated which means that they can detect motion behind solid objects.
  • Motion-sensor lighting. There will be a bright light whenever the deterrent notices motion.
