How to Have a Stress-Free Dorm Move-in Day

Moving to university this fall? Move-in day at your dorm can be hectic and intimidating, but there are plenty of ways to properly prepare, stay organized, and ensure the experience is smooth and stress-free!

Talk to your roommate in advance

Reaching out to your roomie before move-in day (or even meeting up if you're both local) can take some of the pressure and anxiety off meeting for the first time when you arrive at school. It can also help you plan better and avoid bringing duplicate items--if one of you brings your TV, the other can bring the mini-fridge.

Make sure you know the procedures and restrictions before you arrive

Check your paperwork for important move-in day instructions–such as parking information and necessary forms. You will also need to know decorating regulations and items you are not permitted to bring--such as hot plates, incense burners, toasters or halogen lamps. Some small appliances may be permitted, like a mini-fridge. Find out what's provided for you--such as a bed, dresser, and desk--so you avoid bringing unnecessary furniture items from home.

Pack only what you need
When deciding what to pack, less is more. Storage space in a dorm is slim to none, and you don't want to spend move-in day trying to somehow cram all of your belongings into your tiny room. Essentials include clothes (packing seasonal, multi-purpose pieces will help you keep your wardrobe under control), school supplies, toiletries, cleaning supplies, linens and towels. Make a list of everything you think you need, and go through it several times to cut back to the bare necessities only.

Have help
Whether you hire movers or round up some family and friends, you'll need a few extra pairs of strong hands to help you haul your stuff into your dorm. You may have a limited time to unload your vehicle (many other students will be arriving at the same time, after all) so you want to get everything out of the car and into your room as quickly as possible. Your parents, siblings, or best friends will likely be happy to pitch in--however, if unavailable, you should definitely consider hiring movers, especially for a long distance move.
