How to Maintain Your Lawn in the Winter

You might think there's nothing to do for your lawn in the winter, but you'd be wrong-- there's plenty of lawn care you could be doing. Some lawn care should be done before winter begins, but there are also lawn care tips you can do during the winter to make sure spring looks green.

Fertilizing the lawn before the winter

Fertilizing your lawn during late fall and early winter are the best times for cool-weather grasses. Most lawns in North America are cool-weather grass so it's a safe bet your lawn is made up of either Bermuda or bluegrass, so before the first freeze a thorough fertilizing is recommended. This will keep your lawn rich with nutrients during the cold winter months and feed the roots well ahead of the spring thaw.

Clear your lawn in the winter
Keeping your lawn clear during the winter will help you prevent dead spots come spring time. Before any major snowfalls, be sure to put away any furniture, toys or other objects that might have called the lawn home during the spring, summer or fall.

Avoid walking on the lawn as much as possible
Excessive foot traffic on your lawn can be detrimental to its health and condition. If there's a path forming from excessive foot traffic the lawn may not recover when spring comes around. You should never let anyone park any vehicles on your lawn because it's the fastest way to kill it!

Prepare in the fall
As mentioned before, a lot of winter lawn care tips happen in the fall. Prevention is the key to a lush and green lawn. So just remember to fertilize before the snow and to cut the grass short before winter creeps in.
