In a DIY Mood? Don't Do These!

via PixabayMany of us enjoy creating DIY projects for ourselves. But just because we can complete these home improvement projects by ourselves doesn't mean we should. Some of these projects require licensed professionals, especially ones that call for technical knowledge, special equipment or complicated procedures. DIY projects can get dangerous if you are not properly trained or equipped to deal with unforeseen circumstances.

In fact, some home improvements are actually illegal to do by yourself. Here is a list of DIY projects you should definitely hire a pro to do:

Installing a new gas stove

What are you thinking? You should hire two pros to do this job because the new stove needs to meet certain codes and pass safety inspections.

Removing asbestos
Various laws regulate the removal of asbestos because the substance can be toxic if you don't follow the proper safety precautions. Hire a team!

Repairing your HVAC system
If you try to repair or replace your HVAC system, you may void your warranty. It's better to hire a licensed professional who knows what s/he is doing.

Installing or replacing your water heater
It's better to be safe in this case--hire a licensed plumber to deal with your water heater! There are permits, safety regulations and codes to adhere to, not to mention the risk of carbon monoxide emissions.

Cleaning out your septic tank
This job requires special equipment, in addition to permits to dispose of the waste properly. Call a trained professional for this project.

Removing a wild animal from your property
First of all, going near a wild animal like a raccoon or skunk can be dangerous because of rabies and other diseases they may carry. Also, harming wildlife can have legal repercussions. So, it's always better to play it safe and call animal control to remove the critter from your home or yard.

Remodeling your home
If you plan on taking out a wall to create a more open space, you definitely want to consult a professional first. Many cities and towns require special permits to remove walls, especially if they are structurally important. Call a specialist so you don't do irreparable damage to your home!

Installing electrical wiring
If you don't have the proper permits to add wiring to your home for new light fixtures and other items, you may not be covered under your insurance plan in the case of a house fire. Let a pro do it.
