Some Movies About Moving for Your Kids

Moving isn’t an easy task for anyone in the family. Adults have enough trouble trying to coordinate the move, dealing with all of the finances and organization. But the kids have it rough as well.--their whole world is being uprooted and they have to say goodbye to friends, classmates, and everything they've grown up to know.

With that said, here are a list of some family-friendly movies that can help your young kids and teens through the emotions that come along with moving.

Keep in mind that some of these movies are better suited for older teens, so use your best judgement when popping in the DVD.

The Karate Kid
The original Karate Kid revolves around teen Daniel Larusso’s move from Newark, New Jersey to Los Angeles, California, and his struggle to fit in. Luckily, Mr. Miyagi gives Daniel-san confidence, discipline, and a mentor/friend to guide him.

Toy Story
The first of the Toy Story trilogy. Who can forget the anxiety revolving around the big move for Andy and his toys? A perfect choice for helping little ones understand your family move.

Casper
Kat and her widowed father connect with Casper, the ‘friendly ghost’, after moving into a creepy, not-so-new home. It's a fun, not-scary flick for elementary-school aged kids.

Footloose
Kevin Bacon plays the new kid in a dull town where rock music and dancing are strictly forbidden, but his rebellious spirit shakes things up for the residents. If they are willing to get past the 80s cheesiness, it is perfect for high-schoolers who aren’t too excited about making a long distance move.

Cheaper by the Dozen
A big family moves to new home so the patriarch can have his dream job, but it's a big adjustment for each of the 12 kids in their own way.

Because of Winn-Dixie
A heartwarming story about a little girl who only wants to make friends in her new town, and ends up finding a special dog that impacts everyone he meets.

Hopefully these movies will help your kids prepare or get used to their new surroundings. TopMoving.ca also has a number of other tips and guides to help you and your kids adjust to your move.
