Moving a Pool Table On Your Own

Relocating a Billiard TableLooking to move your pool table

This post is going to help you figure out how to DIY!

Now, to move a pool table, you'll need at least three extra people, but do not be afraid to use more than that. The table portion is made of a very hard rock that can weigh more than 800 pounds. Keep in mind that the pool table has to be taken apart and requires a lot of time and patience. You can try to move a pool table without taking it apart, but the absolute best way to transport it would be to take it apart. Keep in mind that each piece of the table (once disassembled) must be wrapped very carefully!

The tools you'll need for this project are:
  • staple puller
  • flat head screwdriver
  • safety goggles
  • socket wrench
  • power drill
Dissemble
The first thing you need to remember in taking a pool table apart is to label and catalog each individual piece as you go along, so putting it back together won't be as difficult. From here, you want to unfasten the six pockets by removing the staples around them. Keep in mind that some pockets are secured with screws, so you may need a screw driver as well.

Next pieces to remove are the rails. You may find that you run into bolts; it is important that you hold each rail while unscrewing the bolts. Keep in mind that your rails may be attached at the corners; have one of your helpers flip the piece over to be taken apart accurately. Wrap the rails and the legs of the table, and set them aside.

If you are planning on replacing the felt after you move, just rip it off. However if you are trying not to ruin it, it can be very time consuming as you must remove each staple very carefully to be able to reuse the felt once again.

In order to remove the slate, you must use your power drill to remove the screws attaching the frame to the slate. Make sure you wrap the frame. Put this piece in first, and put the legs and rails on top of it.

Reassemble
You moved into your new home and found the perfect place for your pool table. Now comes the tricky part. First off, you need to assemble the base of the pool table with the pool table upside-down. You will need your strong friends to help you flip the table over so it is right side up.

The next piece would be to add the slate which is difficult in itself. The floor you use will not be perfectly level, so you have to level the slate according to the floor you set it up on. Use shims to get the table perfectly level. Once the table is leveled, the seams will need waxing. You can use beeswax to wax the seams as well as fill in screw holes. If you do this, you will need a propane torch to melt the wax. Once dry, you will need a paint scraper to smooth out the surface.

Next you would need to add the felt and the rails; use a razor blade to cut out holes to add the bolts.

In order to make sure there aren't any air bubbles in the felt, use the paint scraper to streamline the felt -- getting out all the bumps and creases.

The final step is attaching the rails and closing all the gaps; continue to make sure there are no wrinkles created in the felt.

If all else fails, don't hesitate to give the experts a call! After all, it is a heavy item, and the goal is to keep it in the best condition possible.
