No Hate, No Fear, Refugees are Welcome Here

Canada Welcomes RefugeesThe United States president, Donald Trump, recently signed an executive order to block Muslim immigrants from entering the country. Trump, not surprisingly, ran a campaign platform fueled by fear; he promised the imposed ban would ease terrorism on home soil. Also not surprisingly, the United States president excluded any Muslim-majority countries in which his company has business ties. Many Americans showed dissent by protesting at the very airports foreigners and Green Card holders were being detained or sent away. White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, backpedaled on Sunday, stating that no citizens with valid visas would be affected, and custom agents use discretionary authority with any returning Americans.

"This ban will have disastrous implications for thousands of innocent travellers, family members, students, business people, indeed travellers of all kinds, but most disturbingly, the men, women and children who are seeking asylum and fleeing persecution," said New Democratic Party Parliament member Jenny Kwan

Our own prime minister, Justin Trudeau, indirectly responded to the restriction on Twitter by clearly declaring Canada's stance. He disapproves of Trump's choice but will not publicly criticize him to maintain diplomacy. The government will provide temporary assistance to anyone displaced in Canada due to this refugee ban. Trudeau walks a fine line, so he does not offend or provoke the new American leader who proved to be unpredictable in his reactions. The United States commander-in-chief may refuse the entrance of Syrian evacuees until further notice, but ours embraced 40,000 Syrian refugees since his election.

Justin Trudeau plans to visit the White House soon; spokesperson Kate Purchase mentioned, "The Prime Minister is looking forward to discussing the successes of Canada’s immigration and refugee policy with the President when they next speak."
