Preclearance Will Make Canada-U.S. Border Easier to Cross

The long-awaited Trudeau-Obama bill that will speed up travel between the US and Canada is one step closer to becoming law.

The US bill that is going to have a broad impact on the Canada-U.S. border crossings just needs one presidential signature to go into effect. As it is know, the preclearance bill will require travellers heading to the U.S. from Canada to clear U.S. customs in Canada before entering the United States. The bill passed in U.S Congress this week and is en route to approval by President Barack Obama. It is hailed as a victory for security and efficiency. According to David MacNaughton, "Preclearance is a win-win for enhanced security and prosperity on both sides of the border."

The Billy Bishop Airport is especially happy with the news as they have been working to expand U.S Customs preclearance there for years, and the bill will provide easier access to the U.S. for their passengers. A spokesperson for PortsToronto hopes that the boost in efficiency could entice airlines flying out of Billy Bishop to add new destinations. The airport sees 164 daily departures to the U.S each week.

The move toward preclearance comes as a way to make Canada more attractive to international travellers. Security wait times in Canadian airports are upwards of 15 minutes whereas it is noted that major airports like London Heathrow have a required security wait time of less than five minutes.

Eventually, preclearance is expected to be a requirement at every train and bus stations with U.S. bound routes in the country and could even extend to car travel.
