Safety Tips for New Year's Eve

Rules For Staying SafeEveryone wants to party on New Year's Eve, but it shouldn't be the last party you attend. Driving while intoxicated continues to be a dangerous pastime for celebrants of New Year's Eve. Injury Prevention also reports more pedestrian deaths due to auto accidents on Jan. 1 than any other day of the year. Take precautions to separate yourself from these statistics. Be alert, protect your future, and arrive alive!

Whether host or guest, plan your evening accordingly.

Festive not fatal

  1. Do not drink and drive!
  2. If you imbibe, pace and hydrate yourself. Remember to eat snacks high in protein throughout the night -- no one wants a hangover.
  3. Stop mixing beer, wine, and hard liquor. Pick one, and stick to it.
  4. Pour/order your own drink, and ditch the glass if you hit the dance floor and cannot keep an close eye on it.
  5. If no one volunteers to be the designated driver, hire public transportation/Uber
  6. Most drunk driving accidents occur between 8:00 PM and 2:00 AM, so stay off the roads. This includes walking!
  7. Impaired walking can be worse than impaired driving, so sleep it off.
  8. Do not overshare on social media, especially if alcohol is involved. You can delete posts later, but it might be too late!
  9. Avoid firing guns and setting off fireworks at midnight. The host/homeowner will be held liable for the noise and damages caused.
  10. Quit feeling obligated to kiss someone as the clock strikes 12 (unless you enjoy locking lips with strangers, that is).
  11.  If you plan to commemorate the occasion in a public place, be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  12. Pay attention to your pets: lock fences, secure identification collars, prepare a soundproof room, or ask the vet for tranquilizers.

How can you sober up?

Don't fall into the trap of popular myths. Neither coffee, nor cold showers, nor vomiting will lower the alcohol in your bloodstream. Water will stave off dehydration, but only time helps your liver metabolize the alcohol in your system. Prevention is still the best defense against nausea, hangovers, and really stupid decisions.
