Tips to Help a Teen Adjust to a Move

"We're moving" is probably the last thing that a teen wants to be told by his or her parents. Teens have enough stress as it is, from school work, relationship drama, and etc. It certainly won't be easy for them to have to drop everything and move to an entirely new area, with a new school and new friends. However, there are a few things parents can do to help make this move a little easier for their teenager.

Here are five tips for Helping a Teen Adjust to a Move:

1. Listen

Let your teen vent their frustration to you. Parents should understand their reaction and try to comfort their child. While your teen may throw a tantrum and/or try to talk you out of moving, be patient with them and show that you care about their feelings.

2. Communicate

Try to dig deeper into your teen's feelings. Ask questions about why they are so upset or scared. See if they share any of the same emotions as you. After all, moving is something that is hard for everybody involved. Let them ask you questions and answer them with honesty. The key is to be as transparent about the move as possible.

3. Let Them Be Involved

It is important that you tell your teen about the move as soon as it becomes official. This will give them time to accept the change that is happening. This will also allow you to involve them in the planning process. If you are house-hunting, give them the option to come along. Find out more information about the new community. This will likely allow for a smoother transition to the new home.

4. Encourage Them to Stay Connected

Just because your teen is moving, doesn't mean they have to lose touch with all of their old friends. With social media, staying connected has become much easier. Reassure them that they will be able to visit their friends and talk to them over the phone.

5. Make it a Life-Lesson

Moving can be a very emotional experience. It will take a lot out of you, but your teen should know that this experience will only make them stronger. Life throws unexpected curve-balls at times, and they have to be ready to embrace change.
