Toronto Taxi Drivers Are Suing Uber for More than $400 Million

Looking to move to a province that has Uber drivers? Well, you might want to rethink Ontario -- Toronto taxi drivers have filed a class-action lawsuit against the company. They are seeking more than $400 million in damages and an injunction to stop the company from operating in Ontario.

According to the lawsuit, "Uber X and Uber XL have created an enormous marketplace for illegal transportation in Toronto."

Uber however is having none of this, saying in a statement via email, "This protectionist suit is without merit. As we saw from a recent court ruling in Ontario, Uber is operating legally and is a business model distinct from traditional taxi services."

Earlier this month, the city of Toronto attempted to stop Uber's activities, but the Ontario court ruled there was no evidence to support the claim that Uber is operating as a taxi broker.

The new lawsuit however is different in that it concerns itself with provincial rather than municipal law.

Unconcerned by the lawsuit, Uber has announced expansion plans for Ontario, revealing that they will move into Hamilton and Guelph.
