Since May is the beginning of moving season, you should know that there are some items you shouldn’t pack. If you know what items you shouldn’t pack ahead of time, you’ll be able to lessen your stress on moving day. While each moving company is different, they tend to have a list of “non-allowables,” which are items they won’t transport. With the lists below, you’ll have a better idea of what not to pack.
Flammables, combustibles and explosives
As the name implies, flammables are items that can easily set on fire. These items can be dangerous to the movers, the truck, and the surrounding area if something goes wrong.
• Acetone
• Bleach
• Gasoline
• Insecticides
• Lighter fluids
• Liquor
• Paint
• Shellac
• Weed Killer
• Aerosols
• Fire extinguisher
• Fireworks
• Ammunition
Perishables and plants
Although food and plants themselves aren’t dangerous, toxic, or flammable, they can attract bugs and other critters you may not want at your new home. But this doesn’t mean you have to throw away all your food. You can donate your perishable food items to a local shelter or soup kitchen. Some movers will move plants, but make sure they know the proper precautions with moving them.
• Indoor and outdoor plants
• Fresh Herbs
• Flowers
• Frozen or refrigerated food
• Produce
• Open food items
Important items
This items aren’t necessarily prohibited, but you shouldn’t pack them up in a box and place them on the truck. These items should be kept in a smaller box in your vehicle, so you know nothing will happen to them. Similar to having a carry-on luggage, these items should be kept close. It’s suggested to make a First Night box, which contains all the items you’ll need first when you move into your new place.
• Medicines
• Identification documents
• Money
• Collections
• Stocks, bonds and securities
This list doesn't include all the non-allowables, and since each company is different, remember to ask to see their list. Luckily, at
