Winter is Coming--Are You Prepared?

Although the weather hasn't been too bad so far, we know that winter is on its way. That means snow, freezing pipes and icy temperatures that wreak havoc on your home. Luckily there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent any damage and keep your pipes, home and car running smoothly throughout the winter.

For your pipes

  • Leave a small drip running from your faucets to keep the pipes from freezing.
  • If pipes are exposed in your cabinets, keep the doors open so the air from your home can warm them.
  • If pipes do freeze, use a blow dryer, space heater or heating pad to thaw them out. You can also try putting towels in hot water and wrapping them around your pipes

For the thermostat

  • Keep the temperature in your home the same during the day and at night. It might end up costing more, but it will ensure that none of your pipes burst from the changes in air pressure.
  • If you leave your home for an extended period, leave the temperature at 55 degrees to keep the pipes from freezing.
  • Run a ceiling fan clockwise to keep the heat circulating downwards.

For your car

  • Keep the gas tank full so that it doesn't freeze.
  • Keep at least three days worth of food and water in your car in case you get stranded.
  • Keep an emergency kit in the car with a flashlight, first aid kit, blankets, and jumper cables.
  • Make sure you have a shovel, broom, and ice scraper either in your car or nearby.
  • Make sure your windshield fluid is full. You can make it yourself out of rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, or dish soap. Get the recipe here.
