About Northwest TerritoriesThe Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada and as such enjoys lesser rights than the provinces. The capital of the territories is Yellowknife, also the largest territorial city and the territorial metro area. The Northwest Territories has a territorial area of 1,171,918 Sq/Km or 452,652 Sq miles. Northwest Territories is bounded by Yukon in the west and Nunavut lies to its east. The province of British Columbia is located in the southwest while Alberta and Saskatchewan lie to its south. The diamond related activities contribute to about 25% of the territorial GDP. Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton which are one of the largest resource mining companies of the world operate here. As of 2010 the region was the source for 28.5% diamonds produced by Rio Tinto. |
