Moving internationally comes with many hurdles, including getting adjusted to a new culture, a brand new country and -- depending on where you move -- its very different food. However, one great way to get to know your new culture is to immerse yourself in its cuisine.
Introducing new food
It's okay to want to cling to comfortable and familiar foods after moving abroad, but the best way to adjust to a new cuisine is to slowly start incorporating it into your diet.
- Try new things. Don't be afraid to try something different every day (even foods you're unsure of), unless of course you are in a country with an unfamiliar language and have food allergies, in which case you should be especially careful.
- Observe the locals. Different countries have different dining etiquette, so when you are out and about, watch how the locals eat and take social and cultural cues from them.
- Get advice. Ask your new neighbours for suggestions and when dining out, be honest with your waiter -- he or she can definitely suggest new items for you to try.
Adapting to a new cuisine
While you may have eaten some of your new cuisine in preparation for your international move, making it your entire diet is a very different thing. When adjusting to local food, remember:
- Give it time. Don't panic if your body reacts unfavorably to your new diet. Remember, miracles don't happen overnight and developing a taste for new cuisine takes time.
- Keep an open mind. Find some aspects of your new diet revolting? Maintain an open mind and remember, you don't have to like everything you try, but it definitely helps if you give new foods a shot.
