Unfortunately, sometimes clutter is inevitable. No matter how much effort you put into fighting it, it just appears.
It might be the corner table covered in unopened mail, the unruly donation pile in the corner of your laundry room, or a box of memorabilia you just can't part with. Whatever the case may be, we'll help you tackle it all and offer tips on how to avoid more clutter in your apartment.
Paper clutter
First things first, open that unopened mail. Before tossing sealed letters in the trash bin, make sure that there's nothing pertinent in them--like overdue bills, million-dollar checks or anything like that. Then once it's all opened, decide if you need to keep it. You should keep financial documents and bills and file them away. Credit card offers can be recycled -- just be sure to blackout or shred them first to protect yourself from identity thieves.
Newspapers, magazines and store circulars should be recycled once you've clipped all the coupons and read all the stories. If you want to upcycle the newspapers, you can use them around the house to clean windows and mirrors--or you could use the pages as a base layer in your garden to kill weeds and grass before planting.
To avoid the clutter in the first place, sign up for paperless billing and coupons and catalogs through email for any stores you where you regularly shop.
Household clutter
All the knick-knacks in all the world don't belong on your living room mantle. It's great that you have such an extensive collection of rabbit figurines, but they do not need to all be on display at once. You can rotate large collections from time to time to not only reduce the amount of clutter in your apartment, but also refresh the look of your space.
Spend a weekend each month going through your belongings and sorting everything. Decide if you're going to donate, sell or throw out each item. It might take you a while to get through it all, but when you can finally walk down your hallway without tripping on a random item, you'll be grateful that you did. When you get to the end of the pile, don't forget to actual throw out, donate or sell the items!
Sentimental clutter
Sentimental clutter is often the hardest type to avoid and eliminate. It's understandable to hold onto a family heirloom for sentimental reasons, but birthday cards don't need to be kept quite as long. You've already read the sentiment that went into the card, now you can let it go.
If you must hang on to as many cards as possible, keep the ones that mean the most and put them someplace special--like a picture frame. That way you'll be able to see it whenever you walk by and add a personal touch to your apartment.
