It's highly likely that an international move will take you out of your time zone, resulting in some annoying jet lag and adding more stress to an already trying moving process. Thankfully, there are certain things you can do throughout your relocation abroad to avoid dealing with the effects of jet lag.

Before your move

Symptoms of jet lag vary from person to person and include but are not limited to: exhaustion, insomnia, irritability, hunger or a lack of appetite.

To limit these symptoms or avoid them altogether be sure to:
  • Slowly shift your sleeping and eating times toward that of your new destination several days before departure, a few hours at a time
  • Book a red eye flight that arrives at your destination in the morning--it'll be easier to sleep on the plane than stay awake and you'll be closer to your new schedule
    • Conversely, some people recommend a daytime flight that will have you touch down in the evening for similar reasons--just be sure to stay awake
  • Get a good night's sleep the evening before your move so you get on the plane well-rested and feeling less stressed
  • Avoid taking more than your normal amount of caffeine in an attempt to force your body to stay awake

During your move

The longer you are on a plane and the more time zones you pass through, the greater the chance of increasing your symptoms of jet lag and the longer it will take you to adjust.

Follow these tips to somewhat limit the effects of jet lag:
  • Stay hydrated during your international flight to limit symptoms--this also means avoiding alcohol
  • Don't take sleeping pills which force your body into too deep of a sleep with little to no movement
  • Reset your watch to the new time zone when you get on the plane to begin mentally thinking in this new time zone
  • If you will be arriving at night, keep your naps short after take off so it's easier to sleep in the evening
  • Keep yourself awake and more energized by taking short walks and stretching during longer flights

After your move

Jet lag will pass naturally as your internal clock resets itself to your new time zone and will be easier to cope with if you are flying west. Although, it should be noted that the older you get the harder it will be to adjust your circadian rhythms.

Upon arrival:
  • Stay awake as close to your new bedtime as possible if you land during the day
  • Take a walk outside in the sun after you arrive--natural light is proven to help assist your natural clock in its readjustment
  • Give your body a necessary boost by staying hydrated and eating healthy (and light) the day you arrive
  • Wind down in your new home before bedtime with a hot bath which can help ease you into a comforting sleep
