Hardwood floors are a beautiful feature in any home, as long as they are properly cared for. They are easily scratched and damaged, and keeping them clean can be a chore. Harsh chemicals can add to the wear and tear of the floor instead of making them shine. Use smart cleaning methods to keep your floors looking new and make maintaining them even easier.
Basic dust mopping
To maintain your floor week-to-week, use a dusting mop to pick up dust, dirt and hair that has accumulated on the floor. Vacuum the leftover debris with a floor attachment, or your vacuum on the hard floor setting. If your vacuum has a beater brush, it can scratch or damage the floor if left on the carpet setting.
Deep cleaning
Dust mopping will clean off all of the surface dirt, but it won't get rid of the oils and grime that builds up over time. Every few months, deep clean your floors to bring them back to their original shine. Use diluted wood cleaner and damp mop the floor with a soft, or microfiber cloth. Make sure to ring out the cloth, too much water can damage the wood. Rinse with a damp mop only if the wood cleaner requires it. Otherwise, let the floor air dry, and consider an industrial fan if the weather is particularly humid.
Removing marks and polishing
Before you try to remove a mark, consider the floor's finish.
Urethane. A urethane or polyurethane finish is hard and stains will sit on the surface. Wipe stains from a hard finish with a soft clean cloth. Never use sandpaper or steel wool as the rough surface can permanently damage the finish. Soft oil. Most commonly found in older homes where the floors have not been refinished or resealed. The stain will have penetrated into the wood.
- Dark spots and stains- Rub the spots with steel wool and floor wax. If the area is still dark, apply vinegar or bleach and allow it to soak into the floor for an hour. Rinse with a damp cloth.
- Heel marks- Use fine steel wool to rub into floor wax.
- Oil stains-Use dish-washing detergent to break down grease. Rinse with clear water.
- Water marks- Use steel wool and floor wax to buff out the stain.
Polish the floor with a microfiber cloth or wood polish after cleaning to fill in any scratches and even out the surface.
Protecting the floor
No matter how well you take care of the floor, if people are walking on it, damages and scratches can happen. In high-traffic parts of your home, use mats or area rugs to cover the hardwood. You can show off your beautiful floors in the areas with less traffic and you won't need to deep clean the floors as frequently. |
