How to Clean Wood Furniture

Wood has been used to create furniture for hundreds and hundreds of years because of the material's beauty, versatility, and toughness. However, you need to clean your wood furniture with care so it will last for generations.

Every day care

Regardless of the wood finish, there are some everyday cleaning methods that shouldn’t damage your furniture. You should dust with a microfibre cloth rather than a feather duster--feather dusters could scratch your wood furniture if the quill is sharp or sticking out. Also, a microfibre cloth will hold onto more dust than a regular soft cloth. Make sure when you dusting, you are going in the direction of the grain. This will help maintain the wood grain. Use spray polish sparingly. The polish dulls the wood and make sure to spray into a cloth and not directly onto the wood furniture.

Paint

If your wood is painted, you should clean it with a dish detergent. Mix water with a few drops of dish liquid and dip your cloth in it. Make sure to wring the cloth out before washing your painted wood furniture--too much water can be damaging.  After you wash it, make sure to dry the wood fully. Dish detergent is a great for removing grease.

Unsealed

Similar to paint, you should clean unsealed wood with a dish detergent. Again, make sure to apply it with a cloth and not directly onto the wood--and do not leave it wet.

Stain

If you have a stained table or desk, try to only clean it with a damp dust--spray a cloth lightly with spray polish and wipe the furniture. If it is really dirty and needs a deep clean, treat it as unsealed.

Varnish

With varnish, you should damp dust it as well.  If there are tough spots, use a diluted dish detergent, making sure to not over wet the furniture. You could also polish with a chamois leather cloth or spray polish that has been applied on a cloth.

Veneer

The thin top layer of wood may or may not be varnished and a thin varnish can easily bubble up in water. If it is unsealed, damp dust only. If it is covered with a synthetic coating, wash sparingly with a sponge dipped in a dish detergent mixture. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

Wax

Do not use regular dish detergent with a wax finish. The detergent will dull the wax. Instead, use soap flakes. Mix with a ready-mix wood cleaner. Dip your cloth in the solution and wring it out, then clean. With the other finishes, do not get the table overly wet. Make sure to dry completely with a soft cloth.

Sticky messes

If a sticky mess appears on your furniture, you can use a very diluted white vinegar. In a cup of water, add just a few drops of vinegar. Dip your cloth in, wring it again, and use it on the sticky spots. Make sure to dry completely.
