Going out to a bar to watch a game or hang out with friends can be a lot of fun, but it can become expensive quickly. To save money in the long run, you can create a bar in your home! Also, you don’t have to drive anywhere--you can stay in the comfort of your own home. However, there are many factors to consider when designing and installing a bar--read on for some tips to install the right home bar for your space.

Sizes and spaces

The standard bar height is 42 inches. Most bar stools are about 30 inches, so that will give you enough leg space. But make sure to double check the bar stool size, they could be a few inches taller or shorter. The minimum bar spacing is two feet of bar per seat. You should look around a bit for bar stools that you like and from there build your bar. The overhang of the bar should be at least eight inches. The average bar width is around 16 to 20 inches, which includes the molding. The molding has various uses.
  • It keeps spilled drinks from spilling off the bar and onto laps
  • It provides a comfortable armrest
  • It makes your bar look more professional

Types of bars

There are different types of bars and designs to consider:
  • A wet bar versus a dry bar. A wet bar is a bar with a sink built in. This way you can wash your glasses right there, instead of bringing them to a nearby sink. But you need plumbing, so keep that in mind.
  • Moveable versus permanent bar. Do you want to be able to move your bar around your home and use the room for other activities?
  • Draft system versus a refrigerator. You can install a draft system for your bar which will not only make your bar look professional, it can save you time and money if you’re a beer lover.
  • Built-in ice machine versus temporary ice accommodations. Depending where the nearest ice machine is and how much you plan on entertaining, that should determine what ice situation you should have. If you plan on entertaining a lot, a built-in ice machine will save you time and money in the long haul. But if you plan on only doing it sometimes, a bag of ice should suffice.

Supplies

Now that you’ve created a bar that you love, the next step is gathering the various supplies you need for your bar:
  • Bar spoon
  • Muddler
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Strainer
  • Six to eight of each type of glassware (short, tall, stem, and shot glasses)
  • Coasters
  • Bottle opener
  • Wine Key
  • Bar jigger (to measure out alcohol)

Alcohol

A bar wouldn’t be complete without the main attraction – the alcohol! To have a complete bar, you should have this list of alcohol in your preferred brands:
  • Cognac
  • White Rum (for daiquiris and mojitos)
  • Gin (martinis, gin and tonics, and Tom Collinses)
  • Bourbon (Manhattans, old fashioneds, and whiskey sours)
  • Vodka
  • Tequila (margaritas and sunrises)
  • Cointreau
  • Red Vermouth
  • White Vermouth
  • Bitters
  • Variety of beer
  • Variety of white and red wine
  • Juices (cranberry and orange)
  • Seltzer
  • Lime juice
  • Garnishes (limes, lemons, oranges, cherries, olives)
