When a burglary occurs, people feel either violated, anxious, angry, or depressed. Your home is supposed to be your safe haven and when someone breaks in, that all changes. However, you can’t let a burglary destroy your life. Everyone recovers from a burglary differently and on their own timeline, but here are some helpful tips to help you regroup after the stressful experience.
Notify the police
As soon as you realize that a burglary has occurred, call the police. You should also go to a safe place, like a neighbour’s house. You shouldn’t re-enter your home until the police tell you it safe to do so. You can’t be sure if the criminal is still in the house or not, and you could also destroy evidence without realizing it. Let your neighbours know about the burglary so they can be extra careful and keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
Repair damage
A burglar will usually break a door down or shatter a window to break in. They also tend to destroy items as they search for valuable goods to steal. You should repair the damage as soon as possible to prevent future break-in and help you heal after the event. Some necessary repairs include:
- Boarding up any broken windows or doors
- Sweeping glass or broken pieces
- Rearranging the furniture
Install security systems
It’s not unheard of for burglars to break into your home more than once. Your next step to safety is installing a home security system. According to Family Share, “homes with monitored home security systems are up to 300 times less likely to be burglarized than those that aren’t.” You will feel safer with some form of security installed.
Acknowledge your feelings
You shouldn’t ignore your feelings after dealing with a traumatic event such as a burglary. It’s a good idea to talk to your friends, family, or even seek professional help to cope with stress and depression. Make sure to communicate with your children and spouse to find out if they are dealing with any negative emotions as well.
Don’t stay afraid
It’s common to be fearful after a burglary occurs. If you feel like you have lost control, you can take self-defense classes to help you feel safe and secure again. Another way to heal is to go back to your usual schedule. Make sure to go back to work and make plans with your friends. The quicker you get back to your usual routine, the faster you will feel normal.
