No matter how large or small, a house fire is devastating. The best way to keep your home safe during a fire is to prevent one altogether. Here are some fire safety tips that will make sure you, your family and your home are safe if a blaze ever begins.
Use smoke alarms
Many house fire deaths occur in homes with non-working smoke alarms and detectors. There should be at least one smoke alarm on each level of your home and in each area. Each bedroom or sleeping area should have a smoke alarm and they should all be loud enough so they can easily be heard while someone is asleep.
Be sure to check your smoke alarm's batteries twice a year to ensure they're in working order. An easy way to remember this is to check the batteries when it's time to spring forward or fall back for Daylight Saving Time.
Use heaters and candles properly
If you're burning candles around your living room for a nice scent or a candlelit dinner, never leave the burning candle unattended. Certain lamps and lighting fixtures should also be kept away from curtains and walls because they may overheat and cause a house fire.
Some heaters are safer to use than others because they have auto shut-off features, timers, or they simply do not get as hot. Older heaters may actually burn gas or oil to generate heat, so it's imperative when running these types of heaters to use them properly and not leave them unattended. Regardless of the heater, never leave them on when you're not home and keep them away from curtains, furniture or anything else flammable.
Fire safety when cooking
First and foremost, there should be a fire extinguisher in your kitchen -- one that specifically is made for kitchen fires. Kitchen fires are often caused by burning grease or oil, a multi-purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher labeled ABC is often recommended for home use.
When cooking, do not leave the stove unattended and make sure that the burners are free of anything that could potentially burn. When you're done cooking, clean up any splattered grease or oil from the stove top or oven to prevent future fires.
In case of a fire...
In the event of a fire, be sure to get everyone out of the house and do not attempt to go back in! Call 9-1-1 and wait outside for the fire department to arrive. |
