Keeping Pets Calm During Your Move

Moving is stressful for all parties involved, especially your furry friends! Follow these tips to keep your pets cool, calm and collected on moving day.

Do a dry run

Before you perform the actual move, get your pet familiar with the idea of moving. Leave her crate or carrier out so she can sniff it and get comfortable with its presence, take a test drive to your new location, and if you own a dog, bring him to the new home in advance to get acclimated to the new neighbourhood.

Hire a pet-sitter

Keep your pet away from the stressful hustle and bustle of moving day by hiring a pet-sitter or asking a friend to help out. You have enough to worry about without having to think about your best friend escaping mid-move. If this is impossible, contain your pet to a single room for her safety.

Pack familiar items

Bringing items your furry friends are familiar with on a trip -- such as their favourite toys and treats -- is a great way to keep them happy and calm during your move. These items should also be easily accessible once you arrive in your new home.

Make travel comfortable

Make travelling in the crate or carrier as comfortable as possible by lining it with a soft, cozy blanket. Include at least one item that smells like your old home to limit stress and increase familiarity. When driving, keep the temperature comfortable, lower your music and stop for frequent bathroom breaks!

Set a room aside

Once you arrive at your new home, set a room aside just for your pet and pay attention to her needs first. Lay out her food and water bowls, toys and blankets to begin the acclimation process. Being surrounded with familiar stimuli will definitely help your pet adjust to a new home faster!
