A garden not only adds colour to the outdoor areas of your home, provides vegetables and herbs for you to enjoy. If you're interested in starting a garden in your backyard, read on for helpful tips.
Type of garden
The first thing you should do when starting your garden is decide what type you'd like to have. Vegetable, herb and flower gardens are most common so it's best to start there.
Flower gardens can add curb appeal to your home for a lot less money than an entire renovation. They also add colour and you'll have fresh flowers available for using in your interior home decor, as well.
When it comes to flower gardens, you will need to decide what type of flowers you'd prefer; annuals or perennials. Annuals will offer a lot of colour for most of the season, but need to be planted each year. Perennials will come back year after year, but they may only be in bloom for a short while.
Vegetable gardens will need to be tended to each year and take some preparation and additional planning. Herb gardens are great for beginners, because you can make a small one for your kitchen using only a few small pots.
Where to plant
Choosing the location of your garden will vary on the type. If you're hoping to plant a vegetable garden in your backyard, then you'll need a bigger patch of land to ensure there is plenty of room for your vegetables to grow. Smaller flower beds can be planted along the edges of your home, along walkways or even in window boxes.
Regardless of which type you plan on growing, you should try to plant your garden near the hose spigot so you won't have to drag the hose too far. You'll also need to consider the amount of light your plants will need and how much water they need in general as well.
When to plant
Knowing when to plant can be half the battle. Some plant varieties can withstand harsher and colder climates, while others cannot be planted until after the last frost of the winter has already passed. A bit of research into which planting zone you're located in will help you decide which plants to use in your garden.
