Maintaining a healthy lifestyle after an international move may not be at the top of your priority list, but staying healthy while abroad can help with a number of problems associated with moving overseas--including jet lag and stress.
Cook for yourself
Eating out every day is an easy option, but in addition to not being cost-effective, it's also unhealthy. While it's okay to dine-out every so often, to save money and calories, mainly cook at home. Visit the local grocery store or farmer's market for fresh, local ingredients and get to know your new country! You can even buy a regional cookbook and throw a dinner party to get to know co-workers and new friends better.
Exercise regularly
Regular exercise is a great way to reduce stress and sleep soundly in the evenings. Exercise daily by going on a walk during your lunch break or signing up at a local gym. Taking classes there or at your community center is also an easy way to make friends in your new country. Does your new country have a regional dance? Sign up for lessons to meet new people while immersing yourself in the culture.
Go outside
Staying healthy is also a great excuse to go outside and explore your new town or city. Whether you walk or run around the neighbourhood, introduce yourself to the locals and get a feel for the surrounding area. Going for a walk is a good way to clear your head and familiarize yourself with your new country. Don't forget to switch up your route from time to time so you can see the whole area!
Stay hydrated
A simple way to stay healthy abroad is to drink lots of water. Exercising daily? Drinking water and staying hydrated is especially important after a workout to replenish your body's natural fluids.
Get some rest
Getting a good night's sleep repairs your body physically, ensures you have enough energy for the next day and helps with emotional stress. Exercising throughout the week and waking and going to sleep at the same time every day will create a healthy, regulated sleep schedule. Give yourself the best sleep by turning your bedroom into a dark and cozy environment after you move in.
