If you live in a large city or town, you might not have a lot of outdoor space. However, if you're lucky enough to have a balcony, you can enjoy the best of the both worlds. Here are a few tips for decorating the balcony of your apartment so you can enjoy your own slice of paradise.
Add some privacy
You'll need some privacy to turn your balcony into a special retreat. Hang outdoor curtains that are made to withstand the elements around the edge of your balcony to offer much-needed shade and block the view of any prying eyes.
If you can't find a pattern or print that you'd like for your outdoor curtains, you can always make your own or use indoor curtains. It's important to keep in mind that you'll need to treat the fabric so they last longer. They may also need washing more often.
Comfy seating
Your balcony is a perfect location to do a bit of thinking with your morning coffee, get work done or even do relaxing yoga (if that's your thing). The first two will require some seating and the third--well, a nice yoga mat will do.
There are plenty of options to choose from for balcony seating, including patio sets (which are great for larger balconies) and cafe sets for smaller ones. If you're not looking to invest in a table and chair set, a few stools and chairs might be just what you need.
TIP: A storage bench will pull double duty on a balcony offering a place to store outdoor cushions and accessories when the weather turns sour and a place to sit when the sun comes back out to shine!
Add some greenery
If you're truly trying to turn your apartment balcony into an urban oasis, it will need greenery. Strategically placed tall potted plants can offer you privacy and colour on your balcony. Or maybe you're more into an herb garden? An apartment balcony is a perfect spot for a small edible garden either on the balcony floor or on the railing with window boxes.
Flooring options
Upgrading the flooring on your apartment's balcony is an easy way to add warmth and extra comfort. Because many balconies are made of concrete, adding removable wooden deck tiles will instantly make the balcony more inviting.
A colourful tablecloth treated with weatherproofing material can act as a lovely outdoor rug for your balcony as well. There's also the option of adding artificial turf to your balcony so it will really feel like a backyard.
