Tips for Staying Safe After Moving Abroad

Moving abroad to a new country is an exhilarating experience, but it can also be a nervous and frightening one, particularly if you have moved alone. When navigating your new country, follow these tips to ensure that you stay safe while living internationally.

Research the area first

Visiting a new location within your country after moving overseas? Create a game plan ahead of time, mapping out a route and determining which public transportation to take to get there. Not only will having a plan make you more relaxed and comfortable, but it will hopefully prevent you from becoming lost traveling to and from your destination.

Don't look like a outsider

Do not do anything that would draw attention to yourself as an expat. This means not making yourself stick out to would-be thieves by taking out and studying a large map-- which could lead to a metaphorical target on your back.
  • Research where you plan to live before you move internationally
  • Get to know the local laws and customs such as which side of street to walk on, typical traffic laws, cell phone and tipping etiquette
  • Do not draw unneeded attention to yourself
  • Walk around with confidence and blend in with those around you--this will be your greatest defense when it comes to fitting in

Stay in well lit areas

An easy way to avoid being targeted while living abroad is to stay in well lit areas where you're less likely to encounter trouble--especially if you are out and about on your own and lacking the protection that the buddy system offers. Sticking to more populated streets versus empty ones is also a good idea in these situations.

TIP: If you do get the feeling you are being followed, quickly walk (without drawing too much attention) to a public area such as inside a restaurant or hotel. Never lead anyone to where you're staying.

Keep your valuables near you

Some countries in particular are prone to pick-pockets, and for this reason valuables like phones, wallets and purses should be within easy reach of your own person while simultaneously being hidden from thieves.

  • Store wallets, phones and other valuables in interior pockets rather than easily accessible areas like back and side pockets
  • Do not bring all your credit cards with you--this way if one is stolen you still have the other one waiting for you back at home
  • Keep your purse in front of you when walking in crowded areas rather than swinging it behind or to the side of you
  • Turn expensive jewellery around while on public transit (especially costly rings) or don't wear any at all

Have your address on hand

Have your address written down somewhere in case you become lost or disoriented after moving internationally. Should you run into trouble you can grab a taxi who will be able to get you to your accommodations as quickly and safely as possible. Just make sure that the cab you are getting in is one clearly labelled as a city taxi and not just a private car.

Lock up at night

Before retiring for bed, lock all doors and windows in your new abode--as you would before you lived overseas. The feeling of safety will help you sleep better, preparing you for another exciting day ahead after your international move.

Don't forget to enjoy yourself while living abroad, even more so if it's only a temporary arrangement. Ultimately, remember to stay vigilant and keep in mind: staying safe and being xenophobic do not necessarily have to go hand in hand.
