Utilizing Closet Space

If your closet is small and overflowing with clothes, don't be discouraged. there are many ways you can rearrange and organize your closet to give yourself more room and even make your closet seem bigger than it was before. The best part is that you can add space with little to no renovations!

Double up your closet bars.

Think of all the empty hanging space at the bottom of your closet. Unless you have a lot of long gowns in there, it is pretty much useless. Install a second closet rod, about one meter above the ground to hang shorter and foldable garments.

Get rid of the clutter.

Throw out or give away clothes that don't fit or you know you will never wear. Toss your tangled jewelry and old worn out shoes. The amount of space this will free up may surprise you. use thinner hangers and don't keep a ton of empty ones. Leave a few in one spot so that they are easy to grab and use. If you use cascading or stacking hangers, make sure that it is easy to get the clothes off of them.

Use that back-of-the-door space.

The space behind the door is very valuable and often under-utilized. Hang an over-the-door shoe organizer or clothing hooks over the door. Use this space to hang bulkier items that take up too much space between your regular clothes like coats or robes. Or put a cork board on the back of the door to hang your jewelry and keep it untangled.

Don't forget the top shelf.

Keep items that are not often used but that you still want to keep on the top shelf of your closet. It is probably too high for your most important clothes, but keeping out of season clothes and shoes up there will keep them organized and out of the way. The top shelf is also a good place to store bags and luggage. Keep a small stool in the bottom of your closet if you can't reach so you can easily get them down. Add a shelf divider to make the top shelf into cubbies for easy access.

Put the corners to use.

Corners are a tough place to add storage, but you can add small custom shelves or a short closet rod across the corners in your closet. Use wicker baskets or plastic bins to organize small objects on the shelves. Hang scarves or belts on the corner bar to keep them out of the way.

Add lighting.

It is hard to maintain an organized closet if it is always too dark to see what you're looking for. Add strip lighting or stick on push lights to the top and sides of your closet. It will be easier to pick out the clothes you want to wear, without making a huge mess in the closet.
