Your bedroom will probably the last thing you pack up and the first thing you unload in your new home. Your bed specifically is the most important thing to move and get set up right away. Keep reading to learn the best and easiest way to pack up your bed.
Packing bedding
The first step is to remove all of your bedding and pack it up. Since bedding is not breakable, it is easiest to fold it up and put it into a garbage bag and knot it so nothing falls out. Using plastic keeps your comforter, sheets and pillows safe from dust and dirt and also protects against water damage. If you put your bedding into a box, it is still important to wrap it in plastic to keep it from getting moldy in case the box gets wet. Make sure to clearly label all bags and boxes.
Disassembling the bed
After you've removed all of your bedding, the next step is to disassemble the bed. Your bed will be moved in five separate pieces. The bed frame, the headboard, the footboard, the box spring and the mattress.
- Lift the mattress and box spring off of the frame and remove them. The mattress is the hardest piece to transport, so you will need to give it extra protection.
- Unscrew the headboard and footboard from the main frame of the bed and remove them. Make sure to note which screws go where so you can easily reassemble the bed. Wrap like screws together with pieces of masking tape and write the part of the bed they're for on the tape.
- Put all screws into a marked baggie and securely tape it to the headboard so you don't lose it in transit.
- Take apart the bed frame. The bed frame has four pieces that connect to each other. Use packing tape or twine to secure the pieces of the frame together so they all are transported together.
Packing your mattress and box spring
You have two options for packing your mattress and box spring--you can buy a mattress box to fit the size of your mattress, or you can wrap the mattress in moving blankets and plastic to protect it during the move. Wrap the mattress and box spring so they are completely covered with blankets and plastic. Use packing tape to keep everything in place. The last thing you want is a damaged mattress because the moving blanket shifted on the truck.
Wrapping your headboard and footboard
Wrap your headboard and footboard separately in moving blankets. For extra padding and protection, put a layer of moving pads under the first layer of moving blankets. If you have a wood headboard and footboard, do not use bubble wrap or plastic wrap directly on the wood. Plastic can shrink, especially in the heat and it can damage the wood. If you want to use plastic, wrap the pieces in moving blankets or pads first.
