Another tricky item to pack when moving time arrives is your jewellery collection, due in large part to all the small pieces that could potentially become lost or misplaced in transit and the value of the jewellery you are moving.

Below you will find some tips and tricks for safely moving your jewellery without fear of damage.

Supplies

In order to properly pack and move your jewellery, you will need a few supplies, including:
  • A jewellery box or other sturdy/heavy duty small moving box
  • Tissue paper
  • Packing paper
  • Packing tape
  • A permanent marker

The packing process

After you have collected your packing materials you can officially begin the packing process.
  • Wrap items individually. Protect items prone to scratching, damage or tangling by wrapping them individually in tissue paper.
  • Box them up. If you won't be using a jewellery box for your move, place all your wrapped jewellery in a sturdy, small moving box.
  • Fill in any empty spaces. To make sure that none of your jewellery can move around in transit, fill any empty spaces with tissue paper.
  • Wrap the box. Placing your items in a jewellery box? After all the jewellery is secure, wrap the entire box in sturdy packing paper as if you were wrapping a present.
  • Seal and label everything. Once your jewellery is packed and sealed (whether in a wrapped jewellery box or small, sturdy box) label it clearly as jewellery and place it in a larger box with other items you plan on moving. Seal this box tightly and clearly label it with a permanent marker, noting on the top and at least two of the sides where it should be placed in your new home and what is inside.

TIP: You can also pack up all your jewellery in a roll up travel bag which comes complete with separate compartments and is specifically made for moving your accessories.

Jewellery packing hacks

If you don't want to go the old fashioned packing route, we have included some quick and easy options for packing your jewellery using objects from around your home.
  • Zip top bags. Place your jewellery in individual plastic bags which you can then store in a larger plastic bag.
  • Pill bottles. Have an empty pill bottle laying around? Store all your jewellery inside it. Bonus: no one will think to look inside for valuables.
  • Index cards. Store earrings through index cards, checking that you re-secure the backs after attaching them. Place this index card in a larger bag afterward with the rest of your jewellery.
  • Pill cases and ice cube trays. Separate jewellery into seven day pill-reminder cases or in ice cube trays. When using the latter, seal the top with cling wrap.
  • Drinking straws. To keep necklaces from tangling, feed chains through drinking straws and reattach their clasps. You can then add these to your jewellery travel bag or the large zip top bag you're storing the remainder of your jewellery in.

Moving your jewellery

Have you hired professional movers to take care of the wrapping, packing, loading, moving and unloading of your belongings for you? In order to protect your expensive jewellery, consider moving it separately on your own away from the remainder of your belongings, such as in your car.

TIP: For extremely expensive pieces, look into purchasing insurance for added protection.
