While wrapping and packing cutlery for your move, keep several goals in mind: don't lose anything during this process, protect your cutlery from scratches or damage, and make sure you don't injure yourself--especially when handling knives.
Take a look at some of the helpful tips below to get your cutlery or silverware packed and moved properly. This way, you can get right to the kitchen to whip up some healthy meals in your new home!
Supplies To properly wrap your cutlery and protect it from getting scratched during your move, you will need:
- A small moving box
- Unprinted packing paper or acid-free tissue paper
- Packing tape
- A permanent marker
The wrapping process Before you can begin to pack, first you need to wrap.
- Stack the cutlery. Start by grouping like cutlery (spoons with spoons, knives with knives, forks with forks), and stack them facing the same direction on top of each other in groups of four.
- Wrap the cutlery. With each group of four, place the stack on a sheet or two of paper packing and rolling it over your stack, tucking in the edges as you go. To further secure your individual stacks, consider wrapping each one with a rubber band before wrapping.
- Label the bundles. When you are finished wrapping each stack, label the paper with a permanent marker, noting which kind of cutlery is in which bundle. FOR SHARP KNIVES, DRAW AN ARROW INDICATING WHICH END OF THE BUNDLE IS THE POINTY END to prevent injury.
Another wrapping option To protect your cutlery even further (highly recommended if you are packing silverware -- see below), you can wrap each piece individually, still taking care to keep like items together.
- Take an individual piece of cutlery and wrap it once around in a piece of packing paper
- Add another piece of cutlery (of the same type) and roll that in the same piece of packing paper
- Repeat the process until all your cutlery is wrapped
- Label the bundles as detailed above
Tips for wrapping silver To protect your expensive silverware (not to be confused with your everyday cutlery), there is one important difference. Aside from wrapping your silverware individually (see above), you must also use acid-free tissue paper to avoid scratching and tarnishing your silver.
Of course, if you already have a silverware box for said silver, pack it in that instead, wrapping the box itself in packing paper and securing it with packing tape to avoid damage during the moving process. This can then be placed in a securely sealed and clearly labelled box.
The packing process Once your cutlery (whatever type it may be) is wrapped, you can finally move onto packing.
- Reinforce the box. For safety purposes, reinforce the bottom of the box with several pieces of packing tape.
- Lay down some cushioning. In the bottom of the box, lay down a layer of crumpled packing paper to provide cushioning during the move.
- Box it up. After each set of cutlery is stacked, wrapped and labelled, place it inside your moving box. Fill in any empty space with crumpled packing paper.
- Seal and label. Finally, once all your cutlery is inside your moving box, seal the top securely with tape and label it on the top and at least two of the sides, noting the contents and where inside your new home they should be placed.
Look into professional movers If you have no desire to do the packing, wrapping and moving yourself, hire professional movers who actually do this sort of thing on a regular basis.
