Not counting china, your silverware will most likely be one of the more precious and irreplaceable kitchen items you plan to move. Which is why it's imperative to use proper procedures when wrapping and packing it.
Supplies In order to protect your silverware during the course of your move, you will need to collect a few supplies. These include:
- A small moving box
- Acid free tissue paper
- Packing paper
- Packing tape
- A permanent marker
The wrapping process Take extreme care while you wrap your silverware to ensure that it arrives in your new home without scratches or tarnish. To avoid this problem, you should:
- Pair like with like. Before you wrap your silverware, pair like silverware with like silverware -- forks with forks, spoons with spoons, knives with knives. To save on room, these should all be packed in the same bundle together.
- Wrap your silverware. Most importantly, you need to wrap your silverware.
- Start by lying down a sheet of acid-free tissue paper which will prevent tarnish during transit
- On the edge of the tissue paper, lay a piece of silverware
- Roll the tissue paper over and under your silverware until it is completely covered
- Next to this rolled up silverware, add another piece of like silverware facing in the same direction
- Roll this up in the same piece of tissue paper as you did with the first piece of silverware
- Continue this process until all your silverware is wrapped, keeping similar silverware together
- Add a protective layer. Tuck in the extra pieces of tissue paper and wrap the whole bundle in packing paper. Secure with packing tape.
- Label your bundles. Finally, label your silverware bundles, noting what type of silverware is inside. Additionally, for knives, draw an arrow pointing to the sharp end of the bundle.
The packing process As you did with your normal, everyday cutlery, there are certain steps to take to properly pack your silverware.
- Reinforce the moving box. Add extra packing tape to the bottom of your moving box to prevent it from falling open while being moved. This can add extra stress to you and could potentially damage your silverware.
- Add some extra cushioning. To the bottom of the box you have reinforced, add crumpled up packing paper to provide cushion.
- Pack your silverware. Add the silverware bundles into this reinforced and cushioned moving box. Fill in any empty spaces left after packing with more crumpled packing paper.
- Seal and label the box. Last but not least, seal the box containing your silverware with packing tape. Also clearly label the box on the top and several sides with a permanent marker, noting what is inside and what room in your new house it should be placed in.
TIP: If your silverware is already in a silverware box, wrap the entire box in packing paper and secure it with packing tape. The whole bundle can then be packed in a securely sealed and carefully labelled moving box with other kitchen items.
