Disassembling your bed frame can be a challenge, as can properly wrapping and packing your mattress and your box spring for a move. Thankfully, the easiest step in packing up your bed is the bedding, which is the quickest part of your bed to get packed away.
Don't forget: sheets, comforters, blankets and pillows all count as bedding.
Supplies To pack your bedding for your move and to prevent moisture from damaging it mid move, you will need:
- A moving box
- Mover's plastic wrap
- Packing tape
- A permanent marker
The packing process Since there is nothing fragile to worry about and you're only trying to avoid water and dirt damaging your bedding, the packing process will be fairly straightforward.
- Remove the bedding. Remove the bedding from your mattress. The mattress, box spring and bed frame will be taken care of separately (see below).
- Wrap it in plastic. Wet bedding equals moldy bedding, and that's the last thing you want after arriving in your new home. To avoid this tragedy, wrap your bedding in mover's plastic.
- Tape the loose edges. Be on the extra safe side and seal any loose pieces of mover's plastic down with packing tape. Holes in the plastic means moisture can still get to your bedding.
- Line the moving box. Line the bottom of the box you will be placing your bedding in with mover's plastic in case the bottom of the box becomes wet. This will provide added protection.
- Press it into the moving box. Once all your bedding is securely wrapped, place it inside the moving box with the heavier contents at the bottom. Press on your bedding as you pack the box to compress them and save on space.
- Seal and label it. Finally, seal the box shut with packing tape and label it clearly. The outside of the box should explain the contents inside clearly. Also make note of where in your new home the box should be placed.
Vacuum sealing To save on space and to further protect your bedding, you also have the option of vacuum sealing your sheets, comforters and pillows. This will prevent air and moisture from getting in as well as minimize the space large, fluffy items like bedding often take up during a move.
The rest of your bed If you haven't yet done so, you must also wrap and pack your mattress, box spring and take apart your bed frame.
- Pack and wrap your mattress and box spring
- Wrap your mattress and box spring (separately) in mover's plastic to prevent them from getting wet
- Seal the loose edges of the plastic with packing tape
- Alternately, you can order a specially sized mattress carton for your mattress and box spring to further prevent damage
- Take apart your bed frame
- Unscrew the headboard and footboard from the pieces of your bed frame
- Place all loose screws and other tiny pieces in a zip top bag
- Note on the bag that the pieces belong to your bed frame and tape the bag to the back of your headboard or footboard
- Wrap the headboard and footboard with moving blankets
- Tape the edges of the blankets with packing tape so they don't fall open or get caught on anything during the move
