Your book collection is understandably important to you, so making sure it arrives in your new home safely means packing your books properly. Here are some tips to help you pack up your home library so your moving story will have a happy ending.
The bookcases in your home library are often not only filled with books alone--there are often pictures, knick knacks and other memorabilia. Before packing your library, take the time to pack up those items first.
Packing the books
To pack the books of your home library, take them off the shelves and sort them. Now is the perfect time to get rid of books that you don't need such as textbooks or overdue library books (ahem). Consider donating those books or selling them before your move so you have less to bring with you.
If you already have a system to organize your books on your shelves, make things easier and keep them in that order. Whether it's grouping them by colour, genre or size -- keeping them together will help you pack up boxes easily and then unpack them quickly.
To protect the book bindings and spines, pack them in a box standing up as if they were on a shelf, stacked flat or with their spines facing the top of the box. To further protect any books that may need extra attention, wrap them in bubble wrap or packing paper to ensure they make it to the end of the move intact.
If there is space at the top of the box, fill it with crumpled packing paper so the books don't shift during the move. You'll also want to remember not to pack the box too heavy, otherwise you won't be able to lift and move it easily.
TIP: Pack heavier books in a rolling suitcase. It will definitely save your back and make moving your favourite books that much easier.
Packing the bookshelves
If your home library is simply a row of bookshelves you've bought and built on your own, you'll of course want to bring them with you to your new home. Your best bet is to disassemble the bookcase so that it's easier to transport.
You should first remove the shelves and wrap them individually before placing them on the moving truck. Then, if possible, disassemble the rest of the bookcase. There may be a thin backing on the bookshelf holding the bookcase "together" or it may be kept together with wooden dowels and screws. If you can take the bookcase apart easily then go for it, if you can't then try to move it as carefully as possible to avoid damage.
