A brand new rental may often feel alien and unwelcoming, but with a little decoration and some adjustments to your daily routine, you can make your month to month situation feel like home in no time.
Unpack your belongings The first step into turning your new rental property into a home is to unpack your old belongings, which will help speed up your necessary adjustment period. We recommend unpacking the bedrooms and communal areas such as the kitchen and living room first.
- Fill your rental with familiar items from your old place to have your new abode feeling home-y as quickly as possible
- If you have children, unpack their rooms' immediately to minimize stress and help them settle
- The same can be said for pets, who should be given their own space in your new home surrounded by comforting and familiar stimuli to assist in their adjustment
Turn on your utilities To help yourself settle into your new home even further, turn on your utilities so you--and any family you have--may take advantage of basic (and oftentimes comforting) accessories. Some common utilities to consider include:
- Electric
- Water
- Gas
- Internet
- Cable
- Phone
Get rid of the smell One thing that can be off-putting about a rental after just moving in is the chemical smell that follows professional cleaners. To eliminate this smell while simultaneously feeling comforted and at home, think about:
- Lighting your preferred candles or incense
- Airing out your rental (assuming the weather is appropriate)
- Cooking a favourite or comforting meal in your new kitchen
- Washing and drying blankets and towels in your usual laundry detergent
Decorate, decorate, decorate Unlike a home you own, there are certain restrictions that come with decorating your rental, so be sure to ask your landlord before painting your walls or riddling them with nail and screw holes to hold up shelves and picture frames. This will make it easier to get your security deposit back when it's time to move again.
- Display artwork and family photos to remind you of good times and liven up the space
- Find homes for your collections and memorabilia
- If you are not allowed to paint, lighten up the drab space with lamps, mirrors, furnishings and potted plants
- Curtains, furniture and area rugs are great ways to add pops of colour
- Look into temporary wallpaper or decals to add personality to your space
- Temporarily swap ugly hardware like knobs and handles out for more attractive ones
Throw a housewarming party Fill your new dwelling with good memories to further cement your growing bond by throwing a housewarming party. This can be especially beneficial if you are not too far away from friends and loved ones who will bring good associations to your new home. It's also a great way to meet your new neighbours.
Get settled in your new community After your house and new life is in order, it's time to get adjusted to the area to have you feeling more at home--a process which can be sped up by becoming familiar with what and who is around you.
- Explore the area
- Look into local restaurants and businesses
- Take a walk in your new neighbourhood
- Do some virtual research to see what is around you
- Find and participate in local events (bulletin boards and the local paper are good places to start)
- Join a community group like a gym or library
- Meet your new neighbours
- Be friendly and say hello whenever you see one of your neighbours
- Take part in any and all neighbourhood events
- Consider inviting them to the aforementioned housewarming party
Remember: while your rental may only be a temporary home, it doesn't need to feel like one. |
