Looking to make your apartment more environmentally conscious? Follow these tips to live greener!

Decorating

A great way to create home decor and furnishings on a budget is to upcycle it! Using reclaimed pallets, wood and other found items, you can easily create shelving and artwork.

Need some inspiration? Pinterest is a perfect place to start!

Energy efficiency

  • Unplug energy eaters. Most electronics are designed to consume energy even when turned off, so unplug televisions, computers, cell phone chargers, microwaves, and other plugged in items when not in use.
  • Change your light bulbs. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent ones -- they use less energy and last up to 10 times longer.
  • Lower the thermostat. Turn your thermostat up two degrees in the summer and down two degrees in the winter. When not home, turn your thermostat off completely.
  • Switch to cold wash. Not only is it better for your clothing and linens, but you can save a lot of energy produced by your hot water heater by washing items solely in cold water.
  • Get a low-flow shower head. These shower heads waste less water, but it's important to do your research and find ones that don't skimp on the water pressure.
  • Purchase a dual-flush converter kit. For around $100, you can easily convert your toilet to use less water with each flush.

Cleaning

When cleaning your apartment, use non-toxic, environmentally safe and biodegradable cleaning and laundry products. You should also choose fragrance free products -- fragrant cleansers will pollute the fresh air in your home.

TIP: To make your air cleaner, invest in an air purifier that does not create ozone.

Reduce, re-use and recycle

  • Recycle. In addition to a garbage bin, make sure your home has recycling containers to hold cans, paper, bottles and plastic. If you have single stream recycling, you only need one recycling bin.
  • Go paperless. Limit the amount of junk mail you receive by making all your bills paperless.
  • Create a compost pile. If you have backyard space in your apartment, create a compost pile. Before you do however, make sure it's okay with your landlords and any neighbours who share the backyard.
