You may be worried about the type of roommate you will live with at university, but have you thought about how you can be a good dormmate to them? Follow these etiquette tips for being a well-mannered roommate after moving into a university dorm.

Be respectful

Never steal or use your roommate's things without asking first. This goes for food, clothing, toiletries, partners and any other items that don't belong to you. Is your roommate studying or sleeping? Utilize headphones and/or reading lights so as not to disturb them. Also tell your roommate in advance if you plan to have visitors over.

Share responsibility

Alternate chores, such as cleaning common areas like bathrooms, dusting and taking out the garbage and recycling. If you both agree to share these responsibilities, bitterness is easily avoided.

Clean up after yourself

There's almost nothing worse than a messy roommate. If you're a messy person, don't let the mess extend to your roommate's side of the dorm. Put things away where they belong and clean up after any messes you make as soon as possible. Personal hygiene is also important when living in such close quarters.

Coordinate routines

Do you both have classes in the morning? Discuss a plan of action ahead of time and don't hog the shower. Does your roommate sleep in the morning when you're getting ready? Avoid making too much unnecessary noise.

Confront your problems

Passive aggressive notes do not fix problems. Instead of rudely letting your roommate know if something bothers you, talk it out. Best case scenario? You both agree to solve the problem and be better roommates. Worst case, one of you requests a dorm transfer and you both move on with your lives.
