If you're lucky enough to have a backyard, then you already know that it's a great place to host parties and enjoy the great outdoors. But if your backyard isn't looking like the oasis retreat of your dreams, here are some tips to give it a makeover so that you can get out there and enjoy it ASAP.
Landscaping
Overgrown backyards are not relaxing, and neither are weeds and crab grass. If the backyard needs some major landscape work, and your thumb isn't exactly green, you may need to consult with a professional about how to get your lawn healthy and lush first.
If your backyard lawn is in good shape, you can consider adding in a flower or vegetable garden--to not only enjoy some colour from the flowers, but also enjoy delicious home grown veggies!
Create outdoor living space
Patios and decks are a great option for creating outdoor living space in your backyard. They offer a flat and stable surface to place a table and seating options for entertaining and relaxing. If you don't want to have a formal outdoor dining area, then create a comfortable space with outdoor sectionals and side tables. You and your guests will be able to lounge in style and comfort with a few chairs and weatherproof upholstery while enjoying the sunset.
Outdoor dining room
If you would prefer to have candlelit dinners outside, then creating an outdoor dining area is a perfect way to update your backyard. Again, if you have a patio or deck, this provides you with a stable surface to add a table, chairs and umbrella to protect you from the sun during the day. If you're handy, you can build your own picnic table and benches using one of the many plans on Pinterest--or you can refurbish thrift store chairs for a unique look.
Add lighting
Even though the sun stays out a bit later during the summer months, you still need lighting. String lights hanging across your backyard offer just enough light without being too harsh. Citronella torches will help around the edges of your lawn to keep pesky mosquitoes at bay.
Create privacy with plants
No one likes neighbours peeking over the fence! Use tall plants around the edge of your backyard to create a bit of privacy for a personal oasis. Ornamental grasses and flowering plants like begonias offer a level of privacy from prying eyes without being too secretive.
