Your home should be the safest place for your child. Before you have kids, it's crucial to look around your house and start baby proofing--but keeping your child's environment safe as he or she grows is a continuing process. These tips will help you make sure your home is safe for your child.
Keep chemicals locked away
Many household products are dangerous to children, even items like deodorant and detergent. To ensure your child can’t access chemicals, make sure to lock cabinets. If you can, you should also try to store the chemicals in a high spot. If they are stored in a high location, your child won’t be able to reach them, even if the locks somehow break. Walk around your house and think from a child’s perspective and see what you can get your hands on. Anything you wouldn’t your child to touch should be locked away.
Cover electrical outlets
Electrical shocks can cause injuries and even death. An electric shock occurs when a person comes into contact with an electrical energy source. The electrical energy flows through a portion of the body causing a shock. You can prevent electrical shocks with these tips:
- Cover unused electrical sockets with plastic covers
- Repair or throw away any damaged appliances or electric cords
- Keep electrical appliances out of reach of your child
- Teach your child the dangers of electricity early on
Remove any small objects
Children learn by sticking objects in their mouth. Go around your home and remove any small objects that your little one could get their hands on. Small objects can block their internal airways and cause choking. Some small items include:
- Buttons
- Jewelry
- Coins
- Candies
- Toys with small parts
Invest in stove knob covers
Most stove knobs are directly in reach of tiny hands. Investing in stove knob covers will stop your child from playing with your stove knobs. You can also just remove the knobs when you’re not cooking. Speaking of the oven, you should see if your oven has a setting where you can lock the door. Another option is set up a baby gate to block off your kitchen and keep your child away from anything dangerous in there.
Block off stairs
Stairs dangerous for children. They can climb up the stairs and get to other rooms unsupervised. They can also fall down the stairs. The baby gate comes in handy again. If you want your child to stay downstairs, place the baby gate at the bottom of stairs. If you want your child to stay on the second level, keep the baby gate at the top of the stairs.
