If you're planning an overseas move for work, school or just a change of scenery, one of the things you may want to consider is how to celebrate your native holidays while abroad. It might be Labour Day, Chanukah, Boxing Day or even Canada Day--just because you're living abroad doesn't mean you shouldn't celebrate. Here are some tips to help you celebrate your native holidays while living overseas.
Find other expats to celebrate with
If you're moving abroad on your own it might be hard to adjust to life overseas, so finding expats is a great way to make the transition a little easier. Ideally you would also like to become friends with locals, but during the holidays, you might prefer to spend the day with people from your area who share your holiday traditions.
After you move abroad, try to reach out to some expats from your area who may be in a similar situation. They may also be in the same boat -- homesick during a holiday and desperate to celebrate.
Explore your host country's traditions
Christmas in Canada might be all you know. If you're living in an entirely new part of the world, Christmas is probably celebrated differently than what you're used to. If you're curious about it, go out there and see what your host country has to offer! You might find that it's celebrated similarly to Canada or it might be completely unique -- they may not even celebrate the same holiday at all.
Video chat with friends and family
Ah, modern technology--the holidays are a great time to video chat with friends and family back home. You can give them a grand tour of your new neighbourhoods, your new favourite haunts or just say happy holidays.
Celebrate on your own
It might seem sad to celebrate alone, but if it's important to you to stay in touch with your cultural roots while abroad, holidays are a great to do it. So even if you're in a country that doesn't celebrate Canada Day (which is probably anywhere that isn't Canada) go ahead and celebrate it in the best way you know how! |
