About Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is located the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is flanked by the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The beautiful island has earned the nick name of "Garden of the Gulf" because of its green pastures, scenic landscapes and evergreen agricultural farmlands. Prince Edward Island is also sometimes called the "Birthplace of Confederation," due to the Charlottetown Conference of 1864.

The province is a leader in new job creation and construction in non-residential sectors. The economy is dominated by the seasonal industries of agriculture, tourism and fisheries. Prince Edward Island accounts for one third of Canadian potato production and is a major producer and exporter of seed potatoes to over 20 different countries. Other commodities produced and exported include frozen food manufacturing, seafood product preparation, vegetable and melon farming, pharmaceutical and medicine.

Every provincial resident of Prince Edward Island has universal access to free healthcare. Health PEI helps the residents by covering the cost of prescription drugs and medications, provided they are listed in the formulary. Residents qualifying for any drug programs are entitled to assistance. PEI Hospital and Medical Services Plans are designed to provide residents of the province with insurance coverage for medical treatment and basic hospital services.

The provincial government funds the public schools system in Prince Edward Island. Education is operated by three school boards that are responsible for providing instruction, personnel management, facilities and transportation for students. The public school system has two Eastern and Western English districts which operate 10 secondary and 54 elementary and intermediate schools. The Francophone district of Commission scolaire de langue française operates six schools serving all grades. The University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) at Charlottetown is the only provincial university.

From the earthen pottery at Breadalbane, the woodwork from Rustico or the paintings of the local artists at PEI, the province offers something for everyone. Some of the noted festivals include Victoria Playhouse Festival in Victoria and Montgomery Theatre Summer Festival in Rustico. The province also organizes the P.E.I. Jazz and Blues Festival, a weeklong series of musical concerts attended by famous musicians.
