Tips for Packing Makeup

Individually, your makeup may not be the most expensive items you own, but those palettes and brushes definitely add up to a costly collection.

Follow these tips when packing your makeup for a move to ensure that everything arrives at your new home in one piece in the most cost-effective way possible.

Compartmentalize your makeup

To save on room and required moving space, it's a good idea to divide your makeup into categories and pack them that way.
  • Split your makeup into different groups organized by makeup type (for example, lipstick with lipstick, blush with blush and so on)
  • Bundle all these similar items together with a rubber band to prevent any unneeded movement
  • Place each bundle into its own zip top bag and seal securely

TIP: Further separate these bags into liquids and non-liquids. This way if liquid makeup breaks open in transit the rest of your items are protected from damage.

Pad breakable items

Powders can easily break during your move. To prevent this, store these items individually wrapped in packing paper and placed in cushioned bags stuffed with makeup sponges or cotton balls to save room. You can also place a cotton square or cotton ball inside a compact before packing to protect the compressed powder--or keep the powder puff that came with the makeup inside to limit shock during the move.

Seal your liquids

Extra paranoid when it comes to liquid makeup spillage? To prevent this from happening, take the lid off the liquid makeup, place a piece of plastic wrap on top and reseal the lid over the plastic wrap. Voila, extra protection!

Take care of your brushes

Make sure that your brushes don't bend in transit by taping them securely onto a small piece of cardboard. Once all your brushes are taped down, place another piece of cardboard on top and tape the cardboard pieces together, protecting your bristles during the moving process.

TIP: Only tape down the handle part of your brushes, never the actual bristle end which could damage them beyond repair.

Pack heaviest to lightest

After all your makeup is separated by type and properly padded and wrapped to prevent breakage or spillage, it's time to physically pack your beauty products.
  • Place all these smaller bags in a larger zip top bag or garbage bag (depending on the amount of makeup being moved)
  • Put heavier items on the bottom and breakable powders and brushes on top
  • Pad the bottom of a small moving box with bubble wrap or packing paper
  • Add your makeup bag into the padded box
  • Fill in any leftover empty space with crushed packing paper; the tighter this box is packed, the less jostling around your makeup will do and the more likely it will be to survive the trip
Don't forget to reinforce the bottom of the moving box, seal it tightly and label the contents inside, as well as note on the top and sides of the box which room in your new house it belongs.
