Want to decorate your bedroom to facilitate a good night's sleep? Follow these design tips to create a comforting and soothing oasis for a more restful evening.
Cool down
A hot, stuffy room can lead to a restless night of bad dreams. Avoid this by installing a ceiling fan and opening windows to allow cool night air to circulate. Recent studies say around 65 degrees is an ideal temperature to promote a better night's sleep.
Keep it dark
Invest in heavy curtains to keep out natural or artificial light which may interrupt your sleep cycle. Your bedroom should also be an electronic free zone -- artificial light before bed can interrupt circadian rhythms and inhibit sleep, so ban smart phones and televisions. Cover blinking or bright lights on chargers and alarm clocks and buy dimmer switches and telescoping reading lamps for your before bed rituals.
Remove disruptive noises
Eliminate devices that make ticking or beeping noises and think about purchasing a progression alarm clock which will wake you up slowly rather than all at once. Outside noises can be minimized with rugs, thick curtains and even wall upholstery.
Focus on comfort
Don't skimp on pillows and mattresses. Pick a thread count between 300 and 440 to avoid scratchy sheets and always buy breathable cotton. Cozy blankets and comforters are also a must if you prefer to keep your bedroom on the chilly side, but limit decorative pillows which can lead to discomfort.
Pick a scent
Relax your body and your mind with a soothing smell like lavender, vanilla or jasmine at bed time. Purchase a candle warmer, oil reed diffuser or bedding spray to release relaxing scents. If your partner is opposed, rub essential oils on your wrists before bed to limit the smell to your personal space.
Choose the right colours
The colour of your bedroom walls, artwork and bedding can actually affect your mood and make it harder to fall asleep. Cool colours like blues, greens and greys reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, slow respiration, dilate blood vessels and constrict pupils, leading to a better night's sleep. Avoid reds, yellow, oranges and other warm colours which increase heart rate and blood pressure. |
