Packing Wine Glasses

Much like your good china, one of the more fragile items that you may need to wrap and pack during the course of your move will be your glassware, the most fragile of which will be stemware such as wine glasses.

By arming yourself with the proper packing materials and following these packing instructions, your wine glasses will be protected from damage and/or breaking while in transit.

Supplies

To properly and safely pack your wine glasses, you will want to procure:
  • A sturdy moving box
  • A cell box
  • Packing paper
  • Packing tape
  • A permanent marker

The packing process

Once you have all the packing supplies on hand, you can move onto the next step: the actual packing.
  • Reinforce the moving box. In order to ensure that the bottom of the moving box carrying your wine glasses does not fall open during the moving process (ultimately destroying your glasses), tape the bottom of the box securely with packing tape.
  • Prep your wine glasses. Next, to prevent the fragile glass from breaking during transit, pack the inside of your wine glasses with crushed packing paper.
  • Wrap them. After the hollow space is full, wrap your wine glasses in several more pieces of packing paper. To do this, lay a glass on the edge of the packing paper and roll it and the packing paper together, taking special care with the wine glass stem. Tuck any extra packing paper around the base and over the rim. Repeat this process with all your glasses.
  • Place the cell box. Inside the sturdy box you have bought to move your wine glasses, place the cell box, which will serve as dividers between your stemware.
  • Add more packing paper. At the bottom of each individual cell box, place one piece of balled up packing paper to cushion your wine glasses.
  • Load your wine glasses. Pack your wine glasses into the individual cell boxes on top of the balled up packing paper with the rim facing down.
  • Fill in the empty spaces. Top any empty space between your wrapped wine glasses and the top of the cell box with even more crumpled packing paper.
  • Seal the box. Once all your wine glasses are properly packed, close and seal the box securely with packing tape.
  • Label it clearly. Finally, with a permanent marker, label the box: "FRAGILE: WINE GLASSES" on the top and sides, also noting which side should be kept up during transit -- specifically while people are carrying it and loading it onto the moving truck.

TIP: To save money for your move, you can also go about making your own cell box with supplies you already have on hand.

Moving tips

Still worried about the fate of your wine glasses even though you wrapped and packed them properly?
  • Make sure no other boxes are stacked on top of your very fragile wine glasses in the moving truck
  • Check that they're not in danger of falling on the way to your new home
  • Move your wine glasses separately from the rest of your belongings (such as in your car)
