Packing Your Mattress For a Move

Taking apart, wrapping and packing your bed is not an easy task, especially when it comes time to figure out what to do with the massive mattress and box spring that may come with it.

To streamline the process and take some stress out of your move, follow the steps detailed below for packing up your mattress.

Disassemble your bed frame

Before you can begin packing your mattress, you first need to take off all the bedding (to put aside for later) and remove the mattress from your bed frame, which should then be disassembled and moved out of the way.

To disassemble your bed frame:
  • Unscrew the headboard and footboard from the rest of the bed frame
  • Place all small, loose pieces (screws, etc.) into a zip top bag; label this bag and tape it to the back of the headboard or footboard
  • Wrap the headboard, footboard and the bed frame in moving blankets
  • Tape securely with packing tape so the blankets don't fall open mid move

Supplies

Once your bed frame is taken apart, it's time to move onto the mattress and box spring. To get the job done you will need:
  • A mattress and box spring carton
  • Packing tape
  • A permanent marker
  • Movers plastic wrap

Packing your mattress

With your supplies in hand, you can begin packing your mattress and the accompanying box spring.
  • Order a mattress and box spring carton. To move your mattress in the safest, most damage free way possible, order a specially sized moving mattress carton for both your mattress and your box spring.
  • Pack the bedding. To prevent mold in your bedding, wrap all sheets, pillows, etc. in movers' plastic wrap before packing it in a moving box. You may also vacuum seal your bedding to save on room and preserve it during your move.
  • Place your mattress in the moving box. Place the mattress carton on its side and with help from a partner, lift the entire mattress and carefully place it inside the box, taking care not to let it drag or touch the floor.
  • Seal the box. Once the mattress is inside, seal the box with packing tape.
  • Label everything. While it may seem impossible to lose a mattress and box spring in transit, it's better to be safe than sorry. Clearly label what is inside the mattress carton and note which room it should be moved to. This will make unpacking easier, especially if you have multiple mattresses in your home.
  • Repeat this process with your box spring. Finally, box up, seal and label your box spring as you did with your mattress.

TIP: To save on money, you may also securely wrap your mattress and bed spring in movers' plastic wrap (separately). Close the ends securely with packing tape to ensure no water or moisture gets trapped inside during transit.
